Overview

A permanent ID that works everywhere.

A microchip is a permanent, rice-grain-sized ID implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. Unlike a collar tag, it can't fall off, fade, or be removed. Every shelter and vet clinic in the U.S. has a universal scanner, so a lost pet that ends up at any facility can be traced back to you within minutes.

We use ISO-standard 15-digit chips registered to a free, lifetime-access national database. No annual renewal fees, no upcharges to update your phone number — change your address online any time, free of charge.

The procedure itself takes under a minute. We use a slightly larger needle than a vaccine, your pet barely flinches, and there's no recovery period. You can walk in any open hour and leave with a registered chip and a printed proof-of-registration certificate.

How it works

A quick stop, start to finish.

No fasting, no prep, no recovery. Here's exactly what to expect.

  1. Minute 1

    Walk in

No appointment needed. Sign in at the front desk and a tech will bring you back to a quiet exam room.

  2. Minute 2

    Quick exam

A tech checks your pet over and confirms there's no existing chip. We always scan first to avoid duplicate implants.

  3. Minute 3

    Chip insertion

A quick injection between the shoulder blades — comparable to a vaccine. Most pets barely react.

  4. Minute 4–10

    Scan, register, leave

We scan to confirm the chip reads, register it to your contact info in the national database, and hand you a printed certificate.

FAQ

Common questions, straight answers.

If you'd rather just talk to a human, give us a call.

Does it hurt?

It's comparable to a routine vaccine. The needle is slightly larger, the injection is over in under a second, and most pets either don't notice or give a small flinch. We don't use anesthesia for chipping — it's not necessary and would add more risk than the procedure itself.

Is a microchip a GPS tracker?

No — and that's an important distinction. A microchip is a passive RFID tag. It has no battery, no GPS, and emits no signal. It only does something when a handheld scanner is held within a few inches of it, which then reads back a unique 15-digit number. That number is looked up in a national database that returns your contact info. Real-time location tracking requires a battery-powered GPS collar, which is a separate product.

Can the chip move around or fail?

Migration is rare — modern chips have a small anti-migration cap that grips the surrounding tissue. Every annual exam we scan along the standard implant sites just to confirm it's still where it should be and reading correctly. Outright chip failure is uncommon (estimated at well under 1%), but if we ever can't read yours, we'll replace it at no charge.

What if I lose my pet's chip info?

Bring your pet in any time and we'll scan the chip in under a minute, look up the registry, and either print you a fresh certificate or help you reset access to your registration account. There's no charge for a re-scan or re-print.

My pet already has a chip from a shelter. Should I get another?

Almost never. Bring your pet in — we'll scan the chip for free, confirm it's working, and check that the registration points to you and not the shelter (this is the most common gap). If the chip is fine and the registration just needs transferring, we'll walk you through the (free) transfer process.

How old does my pet need to be?

Most puppies and kittens can be chipped from about 8 weeks of age, and many people add it onto a spay/neuter or vaccine visit. There's no upper age limit — older pets get chipped all the time. If you adopted recently and aren't sure whether your pet is already chipped, walk in for a free scan first.

Aftercare

No recovery needed.

Microchipping is a one-step procedure — no rest period, no restrictions. The one thing worth doing is verifying your registration.
